Families will be able to experience first hand just why Charlotte Magazine recently named Yes I Can Basketball the best youth basketball program in the Charlotte region.

So what makes Yes I Can Basketball so special?

  • Looking for recreation basketball or AAU? You'll be disappointed. This professional program focuses on developing the player rather than the team.
  • Directed by Jackson Day School's new varsity boys coach Coach Sir Darryl Johnson, this experienced trainer boasts impressive basketball experience - he simply knows how to teach and motivate! Coach Johnson will personally direct all the training, drills and teaching.
  • No scheduled practices during the school week!
  • PLAY WITH YOUR FRIENDS: teammate requests can be made on the registration form!
  • Before each 40 minute league game, all players go through 45 minutes of high energy skills training/drills performed by Coach Johnson.
  • Age appropriate skills training will include such fundamentals as ball handling, shooting, passing, defense, dribbling, rebounding, motion offense, 1 on 1 moves & more!

League features: *45 minutes of professional skills training will be followed by league games *Skill development will be lead by our experienced & trained staff members *Games played on an 8 foot basket with 27" basketballs *Teams will be balanced to insure close competitive games *no scheduled practices during the week, all practices held before league games *man to man defense

First day report time will be 9:00am on Saturday, December 10th at Jackson Day School. Plan on your child being in the gym for around an hour and a half on the first Saturday! On this day we'll draft teams/honor teammate requests, hand out uniform tops and schedules, assign coaches, and begin teaching our motion offense.

What to expect in a "Lil Dribbler League"
We have three goals for your child:

1) learn movement
2) learn skills
3) learn how to play the game

Each session will focus on developing these three areas.

If boys and girls learn movement
at this age, they will become better athletes when they mature. We want these boys and girls to learn such critical movements such as, pivoting, skipping, running, shuffling laterally, hopping, landing, running backwards and so on.

Learning basketball skills is accomplished by giving them a steady diet each day of fast paced drills/teaching such areas as: triple threat, passing and catching, pivoting, jump stop, layups/shooting, and defense.

Learning how to play the game will follow the drills/teaching. We issue them uniform tops for them to keep. The league games allow the players a chance to start putting the teaching together in a game situation. We wisely do not turn the score clock on. Focus is on developing skills - less on who is winning the game.

Frequently asked questions:

What height are the rims? We lower the rims to 8 - 9 feet

What size basketball is used? We use a small youth 27" basketball. Perfect for this age

What if we my child has never played before - any worries?
No worries!! Your son or daughter will be placed in a gym with similar players. We simply want them all to have a chance to learn and shines

Who will be training my child - coaching him?
Our site directors are carefully hand selected professionals that have impressive basketball experience - but also have the ability to teach and motivate young players. They will handle the instruction/drills each league day. We rely on parents to volunteer to coach the actual games. In fact we encourage parents to "roll up their sleeves" and step onto the court to help with drills. Positive spirited adults with a love of serving are encouraged to sign up to coach!
